Chia Poops

Chia Pets Poops are the best! Laugh all you want but bowel health is an important topic (and a favourite amongst nutritionists!). Proper and regular elimination is crucial for optimal health and good mood! Without proper elimination toxins build up in our system, and things like cholesterol and estrogen are recycled increasing our likelihood of suffering from all sorts of ailments from PMS, gas, and bloating to cancer and serious inflammatory conditions. There are many factors that contribute to bowel health (there have been whole books written about the subject!) but FIBER is one of the big ones. Ideally we want to get at least 30g of fiber in our diet daily. A diet full of fruit, whole grains and vegetables will certainly contribute to that total but it can be difficult to get a sufficient dose of fiber each and every day.

That’s why I like chia seeds. With a few tablespoons a day I can boost my fiber count and get a load of awesome nutrients at the same time.

Originally cultivated and consumed by Aztecs and Mayans, chia  are tiny gluten free seeds packed with omega 3, antioxidants, calcium, iron and magnesium, protein, and of course, fiber. The cool thing about chia seeds is they become gelatinous in liquid and they are tasteless. This means you can do all sorts of fun things with them:

  • Add them to smoothies or salad dressings to make them thicker
  • Mix them with water or milk to make a pudding/yogurt
  • Toss them on top of any meal

Quick Facts about Chia:

  • Available in white and black (no nutritional difference)
  • No need to grind  or store in the fridge (unlike flaxseeds)
  • Shelf stable for 2 years
  • Available at Bulk Barn, Costco, HomeSense, health food stores and most grocery stores
  • Organic chia seeds are ideal but whatever chia seeds you can find will do (fiber content will be the same but other nutrients may be slightly depleted)
  • Prices vary depending on where you buy (remember you’re only using 1-2 tbsp per serving!)
